PRACTICE 9: ANALYSIS OF A TED TALK

KEN ROBINSON/ SCHOOLS KILLS CREATIVITY

 • 1. What’s the topic of the TED talk? What’s the main idea? When does the speaker introduce his idea? How?

The topics of this talk are education and human creativity. The main idea is that education has to be on the same level of importance that creativity. In the beginning, after a little bit of introduction.

• 2. What are the means of support used by the speaker to convince us that his opinion is right? Provide examples.

Telling us about his own experiences, with a little humour so the listener would follow the talk. For example, he tells us a story from when 3 children had to play the role of The 3 Wise Kings and the last one doesn't know what he had to say, and he says exactly what the adult just told him, by telling us this he tries to tell us that kids are not afraid of making mistakes, and that is important to be prepared to make mistakes and be creative.

 • 3. What’s the speaker’s conclusion? How does he “conclude”?

The conclusion he gives us is that creativity will lead us to a better future, and he concludes by reciting a quote by Jonas Salk.

OPINION PARAGRAPH

I completely agree because it is true that in this society it gives more importance to all the titles you have. They do not care about your creativity or the desire you have to do that job, and also schools do not encourage creativity from a young age, so it becomes a problem in our adolescence. They are killing our creativity; it's sad to say but this is not going to change or if it does it will be in a long time with many changes in perspective. When you are so creative and they don't let you expand and express yourself, it makes you live a way that deep down, you don't want to.
